ACT to be Replaced with SAT

For the past 15 years, all 11th graders in Colorado were administered the ACT as the state’s official college-entrance exam.  A persistent testing-reform legislation, paired with a competitive bidding war has resulted in The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) announcing that the SAT will now replace the ACT as the state’s official college-entrance exam.  Below are some key takeaways:

1. The change to the SAT will take effect in the spring of 2017 (impacting this year’s junior class).

2. All juniors will be administered the SAT on April 11, 2017 (@ Idalia School, free of charge).

3. All sophomore’s will be administered the PSAT on April 11, 2017 (@ Idalia School, free of charge).

4. Kelli Kite has resources available in her office to help students prepare for the SAT.  Please stop by her office if you are interested.

5. SAT scores range from 400-1600 (as opposed to the ACT, which ranges from 12-36).

A. Broken down into two Sections (each worth a maximum of 800 points)

Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (100 minutes/96 questions)

Reading Test (65 minutes/52 Multiple Choice questions)

Writing and Language Test (35 minutes/44 Multiple Choice questions)

B. Math (80 minutes/58 questions)

Calculator Section

Non-Calculator Section

*SAT Essay is Optional (One essay prompt/50 minutes)

6. The SAT underwent changes in 2016, most notably “Right-only scoring” – in other words, you are no longer penalized for an incorrect guess on the SAT.

7. Students may choose to take the ACT (or the SAT multiple times).  However, these opportunities are independent from our school and will not be provided/paid for by Idalia School District RJ-3. (*There are financial aid opportunities available- Please see Mrs. Kite for more information.)
